Barley Straw has been used since the early 90's to improve the water quality of ponds and lakes. When in the presence of oxygen & sunlight Barley Straw begins to decay. During decay it releases natural chemicals that improve the clarity and the cleanliness of the water. Barley Straw does NOT kill algae and it is NOT a pesticide. Instead it creates a unique environment which discourages nutrients that promote growth without harming or disturbing aquatic habitats & life.

Considerations When Using Barley Straw

  • You should never put whole bales of Barley Straw or throw handfuls of it into the water. It must be broken down and loosly packed into netting or mesh bags so that water and air can circulate to encourage decompostition.
  • When securing the Straw around the pond/lake the water depth should not exceed 5 feet in the dosage area.
  • Barley Straw should always be applied in early March or April before aquatic plants begin to grow to achieve maximum results.

When, Where, & How to apply Barley Straw

The best time to apply Barley Straw is before aquatic plants start to grow. If the water temperature is below 50o F it takes approximately 6-8 weeks to decompose enough to improve water quality. If the water temperature is above 68o F it only takes 1-2 weeks. Once the natural chemicals begin to be released the straw will be effective for approximately 4-6 months.

For maximum distribution of growth inhibiting chemicals the Barley Straw should be divided into several small quantities and placed at relatively equal distances from each other and the shore. If you are treating a small pond that only requires 1 bag it should be anchored in the middle of the body of water.

To figure out how much Barley Straw is needed for your pond or lake you should use the following equation:

(Surface Area in Acres) x (225 lbs./acre) = total amount of straw required in pounds to treat the whole body of water.

Our Bales of Straw weigh approximately 35 lbs. each. To calculate the amount of bales required to treat your water divide the total amount of straw needed to treat your water by the weight of our bales (35 lbs.).
